done with the book

I finished up with the Head First iPhone Development book. It think that this is one of the best iPhone development books out there. It is very clear and straight forward. The examples were very good, although they did have some errors. You can go to this page to see any corrections that have been made. There is also a good forum available that you can use if you get stuck.

I was thinking of buying a paper copy of the book because I thought it would be good to have to go back and use as a reference for different tasks. Anyhow, it looks like they will have a new version out in August, so, I think I will wait (that is not too long away).

sketches

Here is what my iPhone sketch form looks like.

iPhone screen sketch

It works pretty good. For my App, I ended up with about 5 sheets. I also made another sheet that shows how where each view is connected.

my App

I have the design pretty much complete. Of course, I am sure as I get into the actually coding of the App, some of those features/designs might change a little.

I went online and found some wireframing/sketching templates for the iPhone. Some of them were pretty useful. I took some of what I found and modified it for my use. It was really helpful to draw out what each view would look like and how they are all connected together.

my App

I have thought some more about my App. My first idea was a little too involved. I have removed some of the features that I thought might be good to have – maybe those will be in a future version. The App was getting way to complicated for a first attempt at the whole iPhone development process. I think most of the features that have been removed won’t really be missed.

I have set a goal of the first of August (first what? day, week….). I figure with the new scope of my App, that should be an attainable goal.

Off to work some more on my design.

my App

I have an idea for an App. It will be fairly simple and straightforward.  I have lots of good ideas for it.

I have started to layout the design. It should be lots of fun.

My App has no name yet. I will have to come up with something. Once I have submitted it to Apple, I will release details – not that it is a unique or unusual App, but I just don’t think it is good to discuss a product before it is all ready to go.

instatwit continued

I am done with Chapter 3 (instatwit). That was fun. The App was pretty plain, but it worked pretty good and was easy to program.

I am doing all this using the iPhone Simulator. I have not had any problems with it.

instatwit…

I am moving along with going through examples in Head First iPhone Development. I have made it to chapter 2. The project for that is instatwit. It is a very simple app to post to twitter.

I had to set up a twitter account for the instatwit App – NerdsGeeksGurus.

Oh, yeah, by the way, I figured I don’t need to join the Apple iPhone Developer Program until I have my app ready to test on a device.

time…

One hour a day. That doesn’t really lead to quick development of an App. Anyhow, I figured as long as I set one hour a day, I will move along (slowly).

I finally have some time to pick up the book and start working with it. I got through chapter 1 today. Not too bad.

Welcome to the Exciting World of iPhone Development.

I have looked into programing the iPhone/iPod before, but I just didn’t have the modivation to really pursue it. Well, things have changed. I have an iPod Touch, but I am ready to turn that in and get an iPhone.

I am lucky enough to have access to books24x7 and Safari Books Online, so I looked at a bunch of the iPhone development books and decided to go through Head First iPhone Development. Here is a link to the Safari Books Online version.

I only get to spend about an hour a day “playing”, so I don’t expect quick results.

Since I have played around with programming on the Mac and iPhone (a little) in the past, I already had the compiler and tools, but if you need them, you can head to the Apple Developer site.
